Sampling refers to a random sample of visitors which represents a larger set of your website visitors. Sampling your website visitors helps derive meaningful insights without being overwhelmed with too much data.
Your VWO plan is bundled with certain visitor quota for research purpose. According to your website traffic, VWO calculates a sample size and distributes your research visitor quota to last through the month. For example, your website has a traffic of 1 million unique visitors per month and you have opted for a research quota(Sampled Visitor Quota) of 500,000 as the sampling size. This means you can track 500,000 unique visitors per month on your website for tracking and analyzing goals, funnels, heatmaps, session recordings, and form analysis.
Attention: Sampling does not apply to Testing (A/B, Split URL, Multivariate, and Personalization tests), Surveys and Website Review.
For visitors who are part of research sampling, VWO tracks all the enabled research features like heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics, goals, and funnels. This allows you to get deep insights into your visitor behavior and a better understanding of your website performance.
Understanding Visitor Quota
Visitor quota refers to the number of website visitors you can test on your account. There are two types of visitor quota in VWO—testing quota(Testing Visitor Quota) and research quota(Sampled Visitor Quota). To view your quota usage, select Settings > Accounts > Usage on the VWO dashboard.
This is the number of visitors you can use for Web Testing and Mobile App testing purposes. After a visitor lands on your website where VWO tests is running, the count will display in the reports section. The visitor is always counted as one even if the visitor returns to the website later, or becomes part of multiple tests.
Visitor quota is exhausted as and when visitors become part of the tests running on your website or app. Each visitor can become part of multiple tests and will be counted only once towards the monthly billing cycle. For example, if there are 3 tests running on your website and a visitor becomes part of all 3 tests in the same month then visitor quota consumed is counted as 1. Unused Testing quota(Testing Visitor Quota) will not carry forward from the previous month.
If you exhaust your testing visitor quota, you will receive a notification through email and all your running tests are paused.
Research quota(Sampled Visitor Quota) refers to the number of visitors you can use for tracking and analyze. Research quota(Sampled Visitor Quota) is used as part of heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics, or goal and funnel tracking; therefore, it is treated separately from your testing quota(Testing Visitor Quota) .
All your Research data (including Goals, Funnels, Heatmaps, Recordings and Forms) is retained on a rolling window basis as per your data retention policy. Based on the volume of visitors purchased, VWO will sample visitor data uniformly from the traffic coming to your mobile application or website (or part of website/pages where VWO tracking code is present) to ensure you get a representative set across a month.
After a visitor lands on your website where you are tracking goals, funnels, heatmaps, recordings, or form analysis, the visitor count will display in the reports section. The visitor is always counted as one even if the visitor returns to the website later, or becomes part of different tests in the website.
