Purpose of the Modification Scope in VWO
Often, you may need to apply the same modification across multiple pages of your website. For example, testing the performance of a new Try & Buy button on every page. By default, VWO extends any modification made on a page to all campaign pages where the same element exists. Visitors will see the updated element across all test pages.
However, not all campaigns require changes everywhere. Sometimes, modifications should apply only to:
- Specific pages (for example, showing different product videos for different categories).
- Particular devices (tailoring layouts for mobile, tablet, or desktop).
The Apply changes to setting in the VWO Editor gives you this control. It is located at the bottom of the editor and can be accessed from there.
Modification Scope Options
The Apply changes to feature allows you to configure changes for:
- Pages
- Devices
Let us understand both in detail.
If your campaign involves multiple pages, choose either of the following based on your requirements:
-
All pages
Use this option when the same change should apply across all campaign pages.
Example: Changing the label of a Try it button on one page automatically updates the button on all pages where it exists. -
Current page
Use this option to restrict changes to the specific page where they were made, without affecting other pages in the campaign.
Example: If your campaign includes three product category pages (Shoes, Bags, and Accessories) and you update the headline only on the Shoes page. Selecting the Current Page option ensures that this change appears only on the Shoes page. The Bags and Accessories pages remain unaffected.
The Current page configuration has an additional setting: Consider query parameters in the URL. With this option, you can apply changes only when a page is accessed with a specific query string. This is useful for creating tailored experiences for targeted audiences.
Example: An e-commerce site sends premium customers a special link:
<URL>?param=promotional+email
Visitors arriving via this link see a discount coupon on the checkout page. If the URL doesn’t contain the exact parameter, the changes won’t apply.
-
Specific pages
The Specific Pages option allows you to target and apply changes to a defined set of page patterns. This is particularly useful if you want to modify a set of pages that follow a similar URL structure. How does this option work?
- You provide a list of page URL patterns (for example- /category/electronics/, or /category/groceries/).
- VWO compares the current page’s URL with these patterns.
- Any modification you create on a page is applied only to these matching patterns.
Example Use Case:
Suppose you want to show a 5% discount coupon on all electronics pages on your website (for example, https://ecart.com).
To set this up:
- Add the pattern - https://ecart\.com/category/electronics/.* (as shown in the following image) and click Update Scope.
- Open any page under the electronics category using the VWO editor, create the discount coupon modification, and click Save and Continue.
This ensures the change applies to all pages under the electronics category, keeping your campaigns precise and targeted.
If your campaign runs across multiple devices, choose either of the following based on your requirements:
-
All devices:
This option lets you apply the modifications across all device types, such as desktop, tablet, and mobile. For example, if you used a Desktop view in the VWO editor to add a banner on your website’s homepage and you have selected All devices under modification scope, the banner will appear on the homepage across all device types. -
Current device
This option enables you to restrict the modifications only to the device type you are using in the VWO editor.
For example, if you make changes to a web page in the mobile view of the VWO editor and select Current device under modification scope, those changes will reflect only for mobile users.
