Overview
As part of a significant infrastructure update, VWO will soon introduce support for IPv6. The inclusion of IPv6 addresses enhances geolocation accuracy and provides a more robust infrastructure for audience targeting. Maintaining compatibility with both IPv4 and IPv6 is beneficial for accurate campaign delivery and data analysis.
Your prompt action is required to maintain the optimal performance of IP-based features.
Required actions
Please review and update the IP address configurations within your VWO account as mentioned below:
Audience Segmentation Using IP Addresses
- Action required: If you’ve used IP-based segmentation for campaigns, you must specify both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in the segment to ensure continuous functionality post-update.
- For example, if you have configured IP-based segmentation in a campaign using an IPv4 address, you would now need to add the corresponding IPv6 address in an OR condition.
IP-based Exclusion from Tracking
- Action required: If you’ve added IP addresses to exclude from the data collection, under the VWO > Settings > Privacy Centre tab, you must now specify both IPv4 and corresponding IPv6 addresses in the exclusion list.
- For example, if you have configured an IPv4 address to be excluded from VWO tracking, you would have to find its corresponding IPv6 address and add it under IP addresses to exclude, as shown below.
Exported Campaign Reports
-
Action required: If you have configured data exports to GCS/S3, after this change, the data exported by VWO may include anonymised IPv6 addresses alongside IPv4 addresses (either of the two for each visitor, as shown in the screenshot below), depending on the visitor’s connection type. If you have any string length validations in place, we recommend reviewing them to ensure compatibility.NOTE: If you are using IP-based login restrictions in the VWO App, they remain unaffected by this update.
Need help finding IPv6 addresses?
Let’s assume you’ve excluded an IPv4 address (office network or individual user IP) from VWO tracking under VWO → Settings → Privacy Centre → IP Addresses to Be Excluded to avoid campaign data being collected for internal users, such as 117.99.196.183. In this case, you would need to add the corresponding IPv6 address to ensure that the feature works as expected.
To get your IPv6 address, you can use public websites like WhatIsMyIPAddress or ipinfo.io.
Steps to get IPv6 addresses
- Visit the website WhatIsMyIPAddress through your browser.
- If IPv6 is supported by your ISP, both the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses will be displayed. Include both of these addresses in the IP exclusion list.
- If IPv6 is not supported by your ISP, only the IPv4 address will be displayed, and no action is needed in this case.
