Overview
This stage of the survey setup flow involves creating the survey and choosing where it will be published. VWO Pulse allows you to deploy surveys on your website, in your mobile app, or via a standalone link. Website and mobile app surveys can be displayed in real-time based on user behavior or events, while link surveys are useful when feedback needs to be collected separately from your site or app.
Create the Survey
To begin, create a new survey from the VWO Pulse Surveys dashboard. Follow the steps outlined in this section.
- Log in to your VWO account. From the navigation menu on the left, navigate to Pulse > Surveys.
- Click Create in the top-right corner.
Choose the Survey Platform
Once you initiate the survey creation flow, the first configuration step is selecting where you want to publish the survey. VWO supports three publishing platforms: Website, Mobile App, and Link. These options allow you to deploy surveys based on how and where your users interact with your product.
Website and mobile app surveys can be triggered in real time based on user actions or events. Link surveys generate a standalone URL that you can share outside your website or app. This makes link surveys suitable for post-purchase outreach, NPS, or email-based feedback collection.
Your selection determines how VWO identifies the location of the survey and the options available in subsequent steps, including audience targeting, triggers, and delivery settings.
To choose a platform:
- On the Configure screen, choose where you want the survey to be published.
- Click one of the following options:
-
Website: Choose this option to publish the survey on specific URLs of your website. Next, define the survey URL.
Prerequisite: VWO SmartCode must be installed on the target website.
Website surveys allow you to deploy surveys on specific URLs or after user-triggered events. You can target visitor segments (for example, returning users or visitors arriving from a specific campaign) and configure triggers based on real-time behavior, such as exit intent, scroll depth, or button clicks.
Example use case: A retail brand wants to understand why customers abandon their cart. The team configures a survey to appear on www.demostore.com/cart whenever a user shows exit intent. The survey helps capture reasons for drop-off in real time.
-
Mobile App: Choose this option to publish the survey inside your mobile application. Next, define the app location.
Prerequisite: To run surveys on mobile apps, you must implement the VWO Mobile Insights SDK in your application. VWO Pulse surveys are supported on the following mobile platforms. Refer to the relevant SDK documentation for implementation details.
Android: VWO Mobile Insights SDK for Android
iOS: VWO Mobile Insights SDK for iOS
React Native: VWO Mobile Insights SDK for React Native
Flutter: VWO Mobile Insights SDK for Flutter
Mobile app surveys allow you to display surveys on specific screens or after in-app events. You can target users based on behavioral patterns, such as first-time users, high-engagement users, or users who reach a particular screen, and trigger surveys when specific events occur.
Example use case: A travel app wants to collect feedback on its booking flow. The team sets up a survey to appear after the Booking Completed event in the DemoTravel app to understand user satisfaction with the process.
-
Link: Choose this option to generate a standalone link to share the survey externally. See Configure Link Surveys in VWO for the next steps.
Link surveys generate a standalone URL that you can share externally via email, SMS, or support interactions. These surveys do not require code installation or targeting rules and can be used to reach users outside your website or app.
Example use case: A customer success team wants to collect feedback after onboarding new customers. They generate a survey link and include it in a follow-up email sent after the onboarding call.
-
Website: Choose this option to publish the survey on specific URLs of your website. Next, define the survey URL.
Once you select a platform, the configuration panel updates to show the fields required for that platform.
Next Steps
In the next step of the survey setup flow, you will configure survey audiences and triggers based on the platform you selected.
To configure audiences and targeting options for website surveys, see Configure Survey Audience and Triggers (Web).
To configure mobile app targeting options, see Configure Survey Audience and Triggers (Mobile App).
Note: If you are creating a link survey, this step does not apply because link surveys do not use audience or trigger configurations. Instead, you can proceed directly to configuring the questions, customizing the survey appearance, and sharing your survey. For more details, see Configure Link Surveys in VWO Pulse.
