In this article, you’ll learn:
Once the campaign results are available, you would need to slice and dice your report to identify the intricate details lying within the folds. This is crucial, as these details can give you a microscopic picture of the reasons encapsulating the performance of your variations/experiences. But to do that, you need the right tool - a strategy to classify your report data. In general, the report data varies with respect to different groups of visitors, as much as their preferences and environment. Sometimes, it may appear that a variation or an experience has performed better with a specific cohort, but as you traverse deeper into the details, your reports will have more stories to tell you.
The key to unlocking the stories is to segment your visitors appropriately. The Segments feature in VWO provides you with a bunch of predefined segments along with the essentials to categorize your visitors into custom segments based on a plethora of factors ranging from device OS and referral traffic to the visitor ID. You can also create segments that are required for your organization using any visitor attribute to classify your report data better. For instance, you can create a segment to see what percentage of the visitors belonging to a given subscription level have purchased a specific product at discount. You can save these segments to use them across multiple campaigns.
Types of Segments in VWO Data360
In VWO, Segments are of the following types:
- STANDARD SEGMENTS: These are the predefined segments, such as Direct Traffic, Social Traffic, Referral Traffic, etc.
- MY SEGMENTS: These are the ones that you can create using standard and custom attributes that you have already created in the Data360 module. These segments can be applied across campaigns to filter your reports.
Creating Segments in VWO Data360
To create a custom segment in VWO, from the main menu panel, access Data360 > Segments > +Create. and enter the details in the following fields:
|Segment Name||Enter the name of the segment|
This allows you to define the conditions for your segments. Click on the first dropdown; the standard and the custom attributes will appear under the Attributes section. Select an attribute, set the relation in the second dropdown, and enter the corresponding required value in the last field.
NOTE: If you’re creating a segment based on a custom attribute, you will be able to see a dropdown to define the scope of the custom attribute. This field is applicable only for Insights (Funnels, Heatmaps, and Session Recordings). You can add more conditions by clicking Add another condition. Or clone an existing segmentation condition by clicking the Clone icon corresponding to it. To remove a condition, click on the corresponding Delete icon.
Scope determines what information is collected in the attributes and is classified as follows:
|Description||To add a description for your segment, click Add description and enter the details.|
Once done, click Create. The newly created segment gets saved under MY SEGMENTS.
Managing Segments in VWO Data360

- To Clone - Click on the vertical ellipsis (⋮) on the top-right, select the Clone option, apply the required changes, and click Create.
The cloned segment appears in the MY SEGMENTS section on the left.
Applying Segments in VWO Data360
You can apply the custom segments that you have created in the Data360 module across campaigns to segment your reports.
To apply your custom segments to the results of an A/B test campaign, click on the VWO campaign you want to look into and go to Report > All Visitors > My Segments.
You can choose as many custom segments as you require to compare the corresponding results. For example, you can compare the visitors based on their subscription levels.
You can as well manage your custom segments right here by using the Edit, Clone, and Delete options available corresponding to each segment. Once done, click Compare.
Now, the segment column in the report table will feature the results pertaining to each segment that you have chosen to compare.
