Overview
Funnel Reports are a powerful tool for understanding website visitors' behavior. They help you identify bottlenecks in your conversion process and uncover why visitors are not reaching your desired outcomes.
VWO allows you to create funnels under the Data360 module. You can configure the steps for your funnels using any metric or event. The report for this funnel can be viewed under Insights > Funnels, which also allows you to post-segment your visitors to analyze their behavior specifically.
Creating a Funnel Definition in Data360
In the Data360 module, you can configure the funnels (funnel definition) and start tracking. You can also use the same funnel configuration and generate multiple reports with different segmentation conditions.
All the funnel reports created using the same configuration are centralized under the funnel configuration in Data360 > Funnels. Any change in the funnel configuration will affect all the linked reports appropriately.
For instance, you want to track drop-offs when navigating from the product page to checkout. Now, if you want to view the report specifically for different regions (say, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore), you can clone this funnel and apply appropriate segmentation criteria.
To do this, perform the following steps:
- From the main menu on your VWO dashboard, go to Data360 > Funnels.
- Click on the Create button.
- Enter a name for your funnel (e.g., Product page to Checkout).
- Click on Add a step to define the steps of your funnel using events or metrics:
-
- Page Visit: Select this event to define the product page visit and specify the URL.
- Click: To track clicks on an add-to-cart button, select the track click event and specify the button’s text content.
- Checkout: Use the checkout metric to track the visitors who click on the checkout CTA.
NOTE: You can create up to 10 steps in a funnel. However, segmentation of visitors in your funnel report is only supported for funnels with 5 steps or fewer. An optimization is underway, and this capability will soon be scaled to support segmentation for funnels with up to 10 steps as well.
- Click on the Create button to save your funnel.
Each funnel page features the following tabs:
Definition | Displays the funnel definition |
Metadata | Displays the basic information about the funnel |
Reports | Features any report that is linked to the funnel |
Creating a Funnel Report in Insights
Once you've created a funnel, you can leverage it to generate insightful reports. To begin, click on the Create a funnel report button at the top-right of the funnel configuration page. This action will redirect you to the Insights > Funnel Reports page.
Next, you can name your report and apply any necessary segmentation to target the visitors for your funnel. Once these steps are completed, click Create to configure your report.
With the funnel report now set up and ready, the final step is to click Start Tracking. This will activate the tracking of visitors as they progress through the funnel, allowing you to monitor their journey and gather valuable insights.
Alternatively, you can also create a funnel report directly from the Funnel Reports section. Click on the Create button and proceed as follows:
- Name the funnel report.
- Configure the funnel definition either by choosing from an existing funnel or creating a new one.
- Configure the visitors for the funnel.
- Click Create.
The funnel report page includes the following tabs:
-
Report: Displays your funnel's tracking report, showing conversions and drop-offs at each step. Click here to learn how to interpret your funnel reports.
- Configuration: This section features your funnel's configuration, including the steps (funnel definition) and any pre-applied segmentation. You can clone the funnel definition or delete it altogether by clicking on the corresponding buttons at the top-right corner.
NOTE: Cloning a funnel definition from a running funnel will transfer the steps from the original funnel to the cloned funnel inside the Data360 module.
Upon removing a funnel definition from a report, you can re-establish it by either selecting an existing funnel or creating a new one.
FAQs
1. What happens if I edit a funnel definition when its reports are running?
Editing the funnel definition while any of its reports is live will flush the data from the live report and start accumulating new data from that point onward.
2. When does the funnel definition created from Funnel Reports get added to Data360?
The funnel configuration created in Funnel Reports will appear in Data360 > Funnels only after the tracking has been initiated.
3. How can I create a new funnel using an existing definition with a few modifications?
You can clone the existing funnel and then add or modify the steps as needed to create a new funnel.
4. What is the impact of modifying a funnel configuration inside a report?
Any changes made within a report will apply only to that specific report and will not affect the original funnel configuration.
