Overview
VWO Pulse global settings allow you to define account-level defaults that control how surveys and concept tests are delivered, presented, and localized across your organization. These settings act as a foundational configuration layer that new surveys automatically inherit. This configuration helps teams maintain consistency while reducing repetitive setup.
At a global level, you can configure settings across three key areas:
-
Survey delivery and response behavior
Control how often surveys appear to users, how repeat exposure is handled, and how many responses are collected. This includes global rules for survey frequency, repeat behavior (one-time, recurring, or until responded), and response limits to prevent over-surveying and user fatigue.
-
Language defaults and translations
Define the default language used for system-generated survey text and optionally preload additional languages. This helps standardize multilingual survey creation while still allowing campaign-level overrides where needed.
-
Style and branding defaults
Set the default visual appearance of surveys, such as layout, positioning, and branding. You can configure these settings separately for web, mobile app, and link surveys. These defaults ensure a consistent look and feel across platforms while adhering to the platform-specific design constraints.
How Global Settings Work (Inheritance)
It is important to understand the hierarchy of settings in VWO Pulse:
-
Global Level: The configurations you set in Settings act as the master template. They define the default behavior for all newly created surveys. When you create a new survey or concept test after configuring these settings, it automatically inherits these global configurations. The global settings do not affect existing surveys. Existing surveys retain the settings they had when they were created.
Note: While most global settings apply uniformly, certain delivery behaviors and limits differ by the survey platform. These differences are enforced at the campaign level and are highlighted in-line throughout this article. -
Campaign Level: When you create a new survey or concept test, it inherits the global-level settings by default. You can override these defaults for specific surveys or concept tests individually.
For example, your global setting for survey position is Right. If you create a specific survey and change its position to Left, that specific survey will appear on the left, while all future surveys will default to the right.
- Platform rules: Enforce constraints based on where the survey is published (web, mobile app, or link).
Together, these layers ensure that survey delivery remains predictable and scalable, while still giving teams the flexibility to adapt individual campaigns when required.

Access VWO Pulse Global Settings
Prerequisite
Modifying global settings requires Design-level access or higher.
To access Pulse global settings:
- Log in to your VWO account.
- From the main navigation panel on the left, go to Pulse > Settings.
-
The Settings dashboard opens, displaying categories such as Frequency and Response, Language, and Style and Branding.
Based on the tab you are on, you can configure the following settings.
Configure Frequency and Response Settings
This section controls how often surveys appear to your users, how they repeat, and how many responses you wish to collect. From this section, you can configure the following settings:
Survey Frequency
Specify the minimum number of days to wait before showing any survey to the same user again. This setting helps prevent survey fatigue by ensuring a user isn't bombarded with multiple surveys in a short period.
For example, if set to 30, a user who sees a survey today will not see another VWO Pulse survey for 30 days.
Repeat Frequency
Define how a specific survey behaves for a user who has already seen it. Available options include:
- Display only once: Shows the survey to each user only once.
- Display until user responds: Continues showing the survey until the user submits a response.
- Display until every question is answered: Shows the survey until the user answers all questions.
-
Recurring survey: Repeats the survey periodically based on configured intervals.
- Show the survey again after: Number of days to wait before re-displaying the survey for a user.
- Maximum number of displays: Limits how many times the survey is shown.
- Loop this sequence after: Restarts the repeat cycle after a defined period (useful for recurring feedback such as NPS).
Response Limit
Response limits control how many responses a survey can collect and how quickly those responses are gathered. You can apply limits at two levels:
- Total responses
- Responses per day
Total Responses
Defines the maximum number of responses the survey can collect across all users before it ends.
You can choose one of the following:
- Maximum: Set a fixed cap on the total number of responses. Once this limit is reached, the survey automatically stops for all users.
- No Limit: Allow the survey to continue collecting responses without any overall cap.
Responses per Day
Controls how many responses the survey can collect within a single day.
You can choose one of the following:
- Maximum: Limit the number of responses that can be collected per day. Once the daily limit is reached, the survey pauses and resumes the next day.
- No Limit: Allow the survey to collect unlimited responses each day.
How total and daily response limits work together?
- If both limits are set, the survey stops when either limit is reached.
- If only one limit is set, that limit alone governs survey behavior.
- If no limits are set, the survey continues collecting responses until it is manually stopped.
Platform-Specific Behavior for Frequency and Response Limits
While the same frequency and response concepts apply across platforms, execution differs by publishing platform. The following table outlines the frequency and response limit applicability for each platform:
| Parameter | Web Surveys | Mobile App Surveys | Link Surveys |
| Frequency Enforced | Using browser cookies and session tracking. | Using the VWO Mobile Insights SDK and device-level identifiers. | Per identifiable visitor accessing the link. |
| Display only once | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Display until user responds | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Display until every question is answered | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Recurring survey | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Total Response Limits | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Daily Response Limits | Yes | Yes | No |
| Looping repeat sequences | Yes | Yes | No |
| Survey redirect link | Partially supported via Intro Prompt question type. | Partially supported via Intro Prompt question type. | Yes |
Advanced Survey Delivery Options | |||
| Mutually Exclusive Groups (MEGs) | Yes | No | No |
| Scheduling | Yes | No | Yes |
| Hide campaign names in visitor settings | Yes | No | Yes |
| Add notes/Add labels | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Note:
- In link surveys, survey visibility depends on repeat frequency and how often the link is revisited.
- Advanced survey delivery options vary by platform and are displayed in the configuration flow according to the platform you select. For more information on configuring these settings, see Configure Other Advanced Options.
Configure Language Settings
Language settings allow you to define the default language behavior for surveys and concept tests created in VWO Pulse. These settings determine the base language of your surveys and optionally preload translations to streamline multilingual survey creation.
Attention:
- Language settings define the default language for system-generated text in surveys or concept tests. These defaults can be overridden at the campaign level.
- When adding translations, you are responsible for reviewing and editing translated content during survey creation to ensure accuracy and contextual relevance.
Prerequisite
To serve surveys to your visitors in the correct language, VWO must be able to identify a visitor’s preferred language. This typically requires setting up a Data 360 user attribute (for example, set_language) before launching surveys in translated languages.
To configure default language settings:
-
Go to Pulse > Settings > Language.
-
Configure the following options:
-
Default survey language
To set up a default language, select the primary language for your surveys from the language dropdown. This language is applied as the base language for all new surveys created after the setting is saved.
The survey’s system-generated text, such as button labels (Next or Submit) and validation messages, will use this language by default.Note: Irrespective of the default language, an English version of the surveys and responses will always be visible. -
Translation language
To add translations to your surveys, select one or more additional languages that you want to preload as translations from the language dropdown. These translations are pre-added to new surveys and can be edited during survey creation. This helps reduce repetitive setup when creating surveys for multilingual audiences.
-
Configure Style and Branding Settings
Style and branding settings let you define how your surveys look across different publishing platforms (Web, Mobile App, and Link). While some visual properties are shared, you must configure styling separately for each platform to ensure the best experience across all of them.
To configure default style and branding settings:
-
Go to Pulse > Settings > Style and Branding.
-
Choose the relevant tab (Website, Mobile Apps, or Link) to define the default style and branding settings for that platform.
Each tab controls the default appearance for surveys created on that platform.-
Website
Use the controls on the Website tab to define the default appearance and layout for surveys published on your website. These settings ensure visual consistency across all website surveys.
For more information on configuring these settings, see Customize the Survey Appearance (Web). -
Mobile Apps
Use the controls on the Mobile apps tab to define default styling for surveys shown inside mobile applications. These settings ensure visual consistency across all mobile app surveys.
For more information on configuring these settings, see Customize the Survey Appearance (Mobile App and Link).Note: Mobile app surveys prioritize responsiveness and SDK-driven rendering. Some advanced layout and branding controls available on Web are intentionally restricted. -
Link Surveys
Use the Link survey tab to configure the appearance of surveys accessed through a standalone URL.
For more information on configuring these settings, see Customize the Survey Appearance (Mobile App and Link).
-
Website
All surveys created after this point will automatically use these global default settings.
Troubleshooting
Issue |
Possible Cause |
Recommended Solution |
| Branding appears inconsistent across newly created surveys. | Surveys were created at different times with different global defaults. | Confirm when each survey was created and which global settings were active at that time. |
| Global settings appear correct, but a new survey behaves unexpectedly. | The survey might have been duplicated or cloned from an existing survey. | Duplicated surveys inherit the original survey’s settings, not the current global settings. Create a fresh survey to apply updated defaults. |
FAQs
-
Can I reset a survey to use the latest global settings?
No. You must manually update the survey’s settings or recreate the survey.
-
If I don’t configure a platform tab under Style and Branding, what happens?
VWO applies the system default styling for that platform until you explicitly configure it.
-
Can different team members override global settings unintentionally?
Yes. Users with the required permissions (the Design role or higher) can modify or override global settings. Teams should ensure that only intended users have this level of access and are aware of the impact these changes can have across newly created surveys.
-
Are global settings versioned or auditable?
No. Changes to global settings are not versioned. It’s recommended to document significant changes internally, especially in shared accounts.
