In this article, you’ll learn about the following: |
About Questions in Surveys
After having set up the triggers for your surveys, you will have to figure out the questions for the survey. The ultimatum of conducting a survey is to identify the pulse of the visitors. And the most important aspect of a survey is framing the questions. Needless to say, framing the right questions will let you tap into the most essential insights from your customers. You can choose to do it manually. Or, if you require help framing the questions, VWO also provides you with bot assistance for the job. The OpenAI-powered AI (Artificial Intelligence) assistance offers to generate the questions for your survey, which can also be manually tweaked to your preference.
On the Questions page, you’ll also get to define the flow of questions, restrict response formats, add logic, and build the survey to suit your business needs. Besides these, if you wish to add any essential information before starting or after the survey, you can do that by adding a welcome or a thank you message, respectively. The Questions page features two major sections, each for automatic generation and manual drafting of questions and a side panel that populates your survey questions.
Adding a Welcome Message
Using the Add a welcome message option, you can add a welcome message to your survey. Adding the welcome message is an optional step. Often visitors tend to skip answering a survey. Adding a welcome message with the appropriate reason for conducting the survey and highlighting how it would benefit the visitors could amplify the chances of getting your surveys answered.
Adding a Thank You Message
By default, “Thank you for your response.” is displayed as the Thank You message, which you can customize to your needs. Using the Edit thank you message option, you can not only thank your visitors for attending the survey but also request them to provide their email addresses to establish contact. You can even use this section to add a link, which, when clicked, would navigate to the corresponding page. While defining a custom Thank You message, you can select the Ask your Visitor for Email option if you want to request the email addresses of the visitors who took the survey.
Using the Question Bank
VWO provides you with a comprehensive question bank featuring suggested questions. You can access the question bank by clicking on the Question Bank button on the right panel. As a question is added to a survey, VWO fills it with a default question as a placeholder, which you can customize. If a specific custom question is to be repeated in the future, too, you can add it to the Question Bank. To do so, click on the vertical ellipsis (⋮) present next to the question and select Add to Question Bank.
The Question Bank has two sections- General, which displays the predefined questions, and Custom, which displays questions added by you.
Adding Questions to Your Survey
You can add different types of questions to your survey to collect information from your website visitors. You can add, edit, reorder and add the next step or questions to be displayed to the survey respondents.
You can choose from either of the following methods to add questions to your survey:
Adding Questions Manually
If you have completely planned out your survey, you can directly create the questionnaire using the manual mode. You can do that by performing the following steps:

- To repurpose your custom question in your future survey campaigns, you simply click on the vertical ellipsis and select Add to Question Bank. You can always access the Question Bank to reuse those questions in your surveys.
- Should you require repurposing the question in the same campaign, you can duplicate it by selecting the Duplicate Question option.
- If you wish the system to automatically rephrase the question on the same context, you can click on Rewrite.
- Select the Make this question optional option to allow the visitors to skip answering the question.

Generating Questions Using AI
When you wish to borrow a third-person’s perspective to frame the survey questions, you can simply use the AI that could generate the questions for your survey based on the goals that you define for your survey.
To generate your survey questions using AI, perform the following steps:
- Click on Generate Questions with AI from the right panel.
- Under the Set your survey goal section, you get to define the goals for your survey. A survey goal can be anything that defines what you’re trying to achieve out of the survey. VWO populates the most popular survey goals for you to choose from. You can choose up to 3 goals and also customize them. If not, you can also directly enter the survey goals, not exceeding 90 characters in total.
- Once done, click on the Generate Questions with AI button.
The AI generates 5 questions based on the goals that you’ve specified. You can find the questions on the right panel. You can click on the drag icon (appears before the question number), hold, and drag the questions to reorder them appropriately.
You can click on the questions to review them. To generate a different question for the same survey goal, click on the Regenerate option. Besides that, you can also apply customization to the question type, question options, and flow options of an AI-generated question.
If needed, you can manually append more questions to the generated list by clicking on the Add Question button.
