Overview
VWO's AI-Generated Ideas is a powerful feature designed to eliminate tester’s block.
Based on just a scan of your webpage, it identifies areas for improvement and generates a list of actionable, data-backed A/B testing ideas for your web pages or goals. Each idea is tailored to your site's content. You can review these ideas, generate more, and add relevant ones as hypotheses to VWO's idea backlog. Once you have zeroed in on the idea you want to test, you can add it ot VWO Hypotheses or turn it into a campaign. Thus, seamlessly integrating the ideation phase with the hypothesis and campaign creation process.
This feature helps you:
- Overcome creative blocks and rely on VWO to generate fresh, relevant ideas for you.
- Save time by going from a blank slate to a list of concrete ideas in minutes.
- Discover new opportunities. VWO may identify tests that you might have overlooked.
Get AI-Generated A/B Testing Ideas
You can generate ideas in two ways:
Method | Use this method when | Use case |
Get ideas for a page | You want to configure and simulate user interactions (for example, closing a pop-up) to capture the right state of the page before idea generation begins. | You want ideas for a homepage after dismissing a pop-up. So you use Scan a New URL to simulate the interaction of closing the pop-up before VWO analyzes the right page state. |
Get ideas for a goal | You want to generate ideas for static pages that don’t need any simulated user interaction. | Your product features page has low engagement, so you generate ideas based on the goal of Increasing clicks on the Request Demo CTA. |
This section further explains each process in detail.
Note: To perform the next steps, you must have admin-level access in VWO. For more information, see Understanding VWO Account Hierarchy.
Get AI-Generated Ideas for Your Pages
- On the VWO dashboard, from the main navigation menu on the left, click Plan > Ideas.
- Click New URL Scan.
Alternatively, enter the URL in the Showing ideas for input field and click Add this url.
- The New URL Scan panel appears. Configure the following details for the page.
VWO uses these details to scan the specified page, perform the defined interactions, and generate testable ideas.- URL: The full URL of the page you want to analyze. This field will be auto-populated if you use the second method from Step 1.
-
Device: Choose whether to scan the page in desktop or mobile view. Based on your selection, VWO will generate A/B testing ideas for the page.
Tip: You can switch between Desktop and Mobile to understand how your test or idea will impact users across different devices. - (Optional) Add Goal: Provide a specific goal (for example, Improve user engagement) to get more targeted ideas.
-
(Optional) Pre-configure interactions: This is crucial for dynamic pages where the visitor must perform specific actions before VWO scans and generates ideas for certain areas of the page.
For example, on an ecommerce website, we want ideas for increasing the visitor engagement with the image carousel. However, for VWO to scan and analyze the section and generate ideas, the visitor must first wait for the carousel to run.VWO recommends mapping out user interactions before configuring the scan. For complex pages, don't guess the interactions. Open your website in a separate tab and walk through the steps a user must take to see the content you want to analyze. Note each click, hover, or wait time. Then, replicate this sequence precisely in the Pre-configure Interactions section. This avoids failed scans and ensures the AI analyzes the right part of your site.
We can simulate such actions by configuring the details as follows:
-
Navigate to: Enter the page URL. For example, https://demo.tryvwo.com/.
Note: This field is auto-populated with the same URL that is being scanned. - Select the action to perform from the dropdown. In this example, we select Wait.
You can choose from:- Click on element: To interact with buttons or links.
- Hover: To trigger menus or pop-ups that appear on mouseover.
- Wait: To add a delay, allowing time for elements to load.
- Based on the action you select, you are prompted to enter the remaining details. In this example, we enter the wait time.
-
Navigate to: Enter the page URL. For example, https://demo.tryvwo.com/.
- Click Add another interaction to simulate other user actions.
- Click Save & Generate Ideas.
VWO generates a snapshot of the page (including all configured interactions) and suggests A/B testing ideas based on the goal and URL configuration.
You can choose to act on the ideas per your requirements. You can add it to your VWO Hypotheses backlog or use it to create a campaign. For more information on how to do that, see Add Ideas to Hypotheses or Convert Ideas into Campaigns using Copilot's One-Click Setup.
Get AI-Generated Ideas for Your Goals
- On the Ideas page, in the Showing ideas for input field, enter the webpage URL for which you want to set up a goal. VWO’s AI will generate ideas tailored to the goal.
Note: If you have entered a new URL (not present in the Ideas database), the system prompts you to add it. Click Add this url. To configure and add the URL, follow Step 2 in Generate Ideas for Your Pages.
If you have already added your website or domain URL while onboarding your VWO account or created A/B test campaigns for certain URLs from your website, this field may be auto-populated with the domain URL or one of the campaign URLs. Click the dropdown to view the available URLs. Select the URL from the list to generate ideas for a specific page. You can update the selected page’s configuration to add custom actions like clicking a button or closing a pop-up. This helps VWO scan the target content of the page accordingly and provide relevant ideas. To update its configuration, click Configure Scan and follow Step 2 in Generate Ideas for a new URL. -
Set your goal to guide idea generation. Choose from the AI-powered suggestions displayed at the bottom of the page. Click the refresh icon to see more suggestions.
Alternatively, enter a custom goal in the text field.
For example, one of the goals for https://www.tryvwo.com can be to Increase click-through rate on featured product banners.
Tip: When you describe the goal, be specific for better results. You can provide instructions by typing them or using the mic icon to record. Once you stop recording, Copilot transcribes your input and converts it into text. Click the wand icon to enhance the prompt. The system generates three refined versions of the prompt. Each version varies in its level of creativity, ranging from clear and concise to creative and expressive. Review the suggestions, select the version that best fits your intent, and click Apply Prompt. The selected prompt replaces your original prompt instantly. -
Click Generate Idea.
A list of ideas for the new goal is displayed on the screen.
VWO recommends keeping your dashboard organized. As you generate ideas, your dashboard can fill up quickly. Maintain a clean workspace by:
- Starring high-potential ideas immediately.
- Deleting ideas that are irrelevant or not feasible.
- Converting ideas to a hypothesis as soon as you decide they are worth pursuing. This moves them into the next stage of your workflow and keeps the AI Generated dashboard focused on new opportunities.
You can now quickly add these ideas as hypotheses or create campaigns. For more information on how to do that, see Add Ideas to Hypotheses or Convert Ideas into Campaigns using Copilot's One-Click Setup.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Cause | Solution |
I entered a URL, but the scan failed with a "page not found" or "cannot connect" error. | The error usually occurs if the URL is incorrect or is blocked by a firewall. VWO's scanner needs public access to the URL to analyze it. |
|
The idea generation process shows a Something went wrong or LLM call failed error. | This rare issue can occur if the AI service is temporarily unavailable or experiencing high traffic. | This is not an issue on your end. Please wait a few minutes and try clicking Generate Idea again. If the problem persists, please notify our team via the Report here link. |
