Overview
VWO Copilot is an AI-powered assistant that allows you to quickly generate a campaign using plain, natural language prompts. Instead of manually setting up every campaign element (changes, metrics, target audience), you can simply describe what you want. The key advantage of this feature is that it can break down and implement multiple changes and actions through a single prompt.
For example, you are running a travel website and want to optimize the homepage design to encourage more bookings. You can use the prompt: “Change the homepage banner text to ‘Book Your Dream Vacation Today’, make the Call-to-Action button green, track clicks on the ‘Get Started’ button, and target visitors from the United States who are browsing on mobile devices.”
Copilot interprets these instructions, applies the changes, configures the tracking, and sets up the audience targeting for you. You can then review, edit, and finalize the changes. Once you accept the changes, VWO creates a complete campaign with pre-filled details.
Some of the key features and benefits of this feature include:
- Rapid Experiment Setup - Users can describe campaign changes in plain language instead of manually configuring them and quickly create campaigns.
- Marketing Agility - Enable non-technical teams to implement visual and behavioral changes using descriptive language.
- Pre-generated Ideas - Based on your URL, VWO Copilot suggests optimization ideas. Apply these ideas directly and let Copilot automatically determine the corresponding changes and tracking.
This article further explains how to set up a campaign within minutes using the Create with Copilot feature.
Create Campaigns using VWO Copilot
With VWO Copilot, you can create both A/B test campaigns and Web Rollout campaigns. The following steps explain how to create an A/B test using VWO Copilot. To create a web rollout campaign, navigate to Web Rollouts from your VWO dashboard and follow the same procedure.
- Log in to your VWO account.
- From the navigation menu on your dashboard, click Testing > A/B.
- Click Create with Copilot.
- In the modal that appears, enter the URL of the page you want to optimize. If a registered URL is already available, the field will be auto-populated. To update it, click
and edit the URL.
-
Enter a prompt describing the changes you want to implement, the metrics to track, and the audience to target.
Tip: Be as specific as possible for accurate results. You can provide instructions by typing them directly or by using the mic icon to record your input. Once you stop recording, Copilot transcribes your speech into text. - To refine your input, click
. Copilot generates three improved versions of your prompt, ranging from clear and concise to creative and expressive. Review the suggestions, choose the one that best matches your intent, and click Apply Prompt.
- Alternatively, VWO will suggest three pre-generated ideas based on the URL you provide. If you find an idea useful, click it to implement and proceed to Step 8.
If you do not want to use the suggested ideas, click View All Ideas. This option takes you to the VWO Ideas page, which lists all ideas associated with the pre-defined goal. Select the idea you want to implement and proceed to Step 8. - Click
.
- The Review One-click Setup pop-up appears. It displays a summary of the campaign that VWO Copilot will create. To modify any part of the configuration, click Edit Configuration. For example, you can add additional pages or refine the target audience. You can also use natural language to update the changes, metrics, target pages, or audience.
-
After completing your edits and review, click Continue with Copilot. A progress modal appears.
Simultaneously, the VWO Editor opens in a new browser tab. A progress modal shows VWO Copilot setting up the campaign, configuring pages, identifying metrics, and generating variations.Note:
- The campaign setup runs through multiple automated steps. If any step fails (for example, generating a variation), the campaign setup process stops. In this case, a red cross icon appears next to the failed step in the progress pop-up, and a partially created campaign may exist in VWO. To proceed, close the progress modal and go to the VWO Editor to manually complete the setup.
- The progress modal in the first tab remains open until you close it manually. It auto-closes once you accept and save the changes in the editor (that opens in a new browser tab). If you close the modal before completion, it stops and cancels the automated campaign creation.
Once all the steps in the setup are complete, VWO implements the changes in the VWO Editor and generates the variation for the idea. Review the suggestions and update the configuration if needed.
-
Use the following commands on the taskbar at the bottom of the page to review and update the changes:
- Changes (x) - Shows the number of changes Copilot has generated based on your prompt. Clicking it will highlight the edits in the editor (for example, updated banner text, button color change).
- Metrics (y) - Displays the metrics Copilot has added. In this example, it is tracking button clicks. Clicking it will highlight the element on which events are being tracked.
-
Edit (
) - Lets you manually edit the currently selected change. For example, if Copilot changed a headline, you can refine the text here.
Note: The pending total in Accept All (n) and Save for this session decreases when you click Unapply. - Exit Editor (
) - Closes the review/editor mode without saving. Any unapplied or pending changes will be discarded. Use this to cancel the Copilot session and return to the campaign dashboard.
-
Click Accept all (n) & Save to confirm the changes.
The editor tab closes automatically, and you are redirected to the previous tab. The progress pop-up in this tab closes, and you are taken to the summary page of the newly created A/B test campaign, which is ready for final review and launch.VWO recommends always reviewing before launching. Even when using the automated campaign creation setup, take a moment to review the final campaign summary. Ensure the target pages, audience segmentation, and goals are exactly what you intended. - Click Start Test to launch the test and start collecting data.

Limitations
- Copilot cannot modify elements that appear only after user interaction. For example, if you instruct Copilot to “Show a tooltip when the user clicks the pricing icon and then update the CTA text inside it,” the interdependency may not resolve automatically, and you may need to adjust it in the editor.
- Copilot does not support multi-page changes in a single prompt. For example, if you prompt, “Update the text on the homepage banner and also change the color of the checkout button,” Copilot will only apply changes to one page. You must use separate prompts for the homepage and the checkout page.
- Copilot for web rollouts does not support automatic metric setup. You must manually configure metrics in the web rollout campaign after Copilot creates the changes.
Troubleshooting
Issue |
Cause |
Solution |
Prompt generates unintended changes (wrong element targeted). | Copilot relies on element selectors and may misinterpret vague descriptions (for example, change the button color when multiple buttons exist). | Identify the button by its text or position (for example, Change the ‘Subscribe’ button to red). Use the VWO Editor to verify the targeted element. |
Copilot created my campaign, but the variation in the VWO editor doesn't look right. | While the AI is highly accurate, complex page structures can sometimes lead to unintended visual changes. | The campaign and variation are fully editable. Simply open the campaign from the A/B test dashboard or launch the variation in the VWO Editor and make any necessary manual adjustments to the campaign or variation. |
Progress modal freezes without errors. | A background step may have stalled (for example, script injection or variation generation timed out). | Refresh the tab, then open the VWO Editor. If a partial campaign exists, complete the setup manually. |
FAQs
-
I clicked "Accept all (n) & Save." Will my test go live immediately?
No. The Copilot campaign creation setup always creates the campaign in a draft state. It will then take you to the Configuration Summary page, where you have the final say. You must review all the settings and click Start Test yourself. You always remain in complete control of when a test goes live.
-
How many changes can I request in a single prompt?
There is no strict limit, but for best results, keep prompts short and focused (1 to 3 related changes). Longer or complex prompts increase the chance of errors.
-
Is there a limit to how many Copilot campaigns I can create?
You can create as many Copilot campaigns as you like. We operate under a fair usage policy, and while there may be backend safeguards to prevent abuse, these are not intended to limit normal usage.
