The first and foremost step in creating your test campaign in VWO is to set up the pages where you want to run your test. The process starts by giving a name to your test. To give a name to your test, click on the pencil icon next to the New Campaign (this is the default campaign name) and enter the name of your choice. Once this is done, you have the option to select a hypothesis to test, define the URLs of the pages you want to test, and configure the visitor segments.

Select Hypothesis to Test
A hypothesis is an assumption that a proposed change would work well for your website. You can associate your test in VWO with one hypothesis against which the test results are evaluated, however, this is an optional step. To learn more about the hypothesis, refer to Hypothesis in VWO. - Define URLs to Test
Once you’ve specified the hypothesis to test, the next step is to define the URL of the pages you want to include in the test. Here, you can also use URL patterns and regular expressions to run site-wide tests. To learn more about URL options, refer to URL Patterns in VWO.
NOTE: Ensure that you have defined the valid web page URLs for your test. Changes can only be done in the pages defined here, and the test is only run to these pages when rendering the page to the visitors. - Configure More Options
This section lets you configure additional settings for your test. These settings include:
- Open in Code-only Mode: This is an advanced mode for developers which allows creating variations in a code-only mode instead of using the Visual Editor. Variations created using this mode cannot be further edited using Visual Editor. To learn more about Code Editor, refer to VWO Code Editor.
NOTE: This code-only mode option is not available in Split URL and Multivariate tests. However, in a Multivariate test, if you wish to add custom code, then it can be done using the visual editor. - Load test pages on a mobile device: Enable this option if you are creating your test for a mobile device. This loads the VWO Editor in a simulated mobile view instead of the default desktop view. If this option is not enabled, VWO will load the website in the default desktop view. To learn more about creating tests for mobile websites, refer to How to Create Test for Mobile-enabled and Responsive Websites.
NOTE: If you wish to display the changes on the mobile devices only, then you need to explicitly configure the targeting conditions to target mobile devices otherwise, your changes will appear on both the mobile and desktop devices. To configure the targeting condition, use the Enable test for a specific visitor group setting. - Enable test for a specific visitor group: VWO also enables you to target your test to a specific visitor segment based on different conditions, such as geographical location, user device, and other user behaviors. Using this option, you can use VWO default segments or create your custom visitor target segment that meets your requirement. For example, you can target a specific segment for visitors who use Facebook on their iPhone device during XX – XX hours of the day.
NOTE: By default, campaign targeting is disabled and all website visitors become part of the test. To learn about defining visitor segments, Segment Gallery in VWO.
- Open in Code-only Mode: This is an advanced mode for developers which allows creating variations in a code-only mode instead of using the Visual Editor. Variations created using this mode cannot be further edited using Visual Editor. To learn more about Code Editor, refer to VWO Code Editor.
