Using VWO capabilities, you can specifically target a group of visitors across different test variations. This can be done using the TARGET option present in the VWO Visual Editor and it enables you to ensure that only visitors who qualify the segment conditions are able to access a specific variation.
Targeting the visitor segment by variations lets you customize the content experiences to a specific group of website visitors. For example, you can create a variation with custom promotional offers for visitors accessing your website from a specific location, or a certain hour of the day, and so on.
NOTE: The TARGET option is supported only for the Personalization and
Split URL test campaigns. If you have set Variation-level targeting,
the traffic percentage will be applicable only after the segmentation
rules.
For example, if you have targeted Control for desktop visitors and
Variation for mobile users, your website visitors will access the
respective version per the segmentation rules applied and not per
the traffic percentage set for each variation.
Targeting Visitor Segment for Personalization Tests
Procedure
- Login to your VWO account.
- To target variations to a specific audience segment, create a personalization campaign in PERSONALIZE.
- Navigate to the TARGET page.
- Click on the All Visitors dropdown corresponding to the variation for which you want to configure the targeting options and select the appropriate one for your variation. To learn how to define a custom visitor segment, refer to How to Define Custom Visitor Segments.
- Once done with your selection, click SAVE.
Targeting Visitor Segment for Split URL Tests
Procedure
- Login to your VWO account.
- To target variations to a specific audience segment, create a SplitURL campaign in Testing > Split URL.
- On the Finalize screen of the test creation process, expand the Advanced Options section.
- Select the Target variations to segments option.
- Click the Edit icon corresponding to the variation you want to target.
- From the available Variation Targeting option, select the appropriate one for your variation. To learn how to create custom segments, refer to How to Define Custom Visitor Segments.
Updating Variations Targets for Your Test Campaign
Once you have configured the target conditions for your variation, you have the option to modify them at later stages if need be. This can be done in the SETTINGS > OTHERS tab of your test dashboard.
NOTE: As a best practice, we recommend you not to change the settings
if the test is already started. Changing the target settings will
skew the reports collected for the variation.
Procedure
- Login to your VWO account.
- Select the test campaign having the variation you want to modify the target conditions for.
- In the testing dashboard, go to the SETTINGS > OTHERS tab.
- Under Targets, select the variation you want to edit, and from the All Visitors dropdown, select the targeting option you want to apply. Here, you can select from the given options or create a custom segment.
